Norma Waterson, Martin Carthy, and their daughter, Eliza Carthy, are the
undisputed "reigning royal family of British folk music." Norma began
singing in the early '60s with her family's famous traditional vocal group,
The Watersons. Martin, a powerful singer, prodigious arranger of the
British Isles' traditional music, and a truly great guitarist, was one of the
English folk revival's guiding spirits, in part thanks to his work with folk-
rockers Steeleye Span and The Watersons, which he joined after marrying
Norma in the early '70s.
An accomplished fiddler and singer in her own
right, Eliza learned her craft in this family environment and is one of the
leading lights of a new generation of international folk and traditional
musicians. (She won Folk Singer of the Year, Best Album, and Best
Traditional Track at the 2003 BBC2 UK Folk Awards following the release
of her solo album, Anglicana.)
Waterson: Carthy performs the
music of England and elsewhere, featuring traditional ballads and tunes
and original songs by Eliza and others, spotlighting selections from their
latest CD, last year's Fishes & Fine Yellow Sand (Topic), joined by
Saul Rose on accordion.
