"How in the world is she doing that?" is a common reaction to the unconventional acoustic guitar wizardry of Kaki King. A self-taught musician, the 24-year-old Atlanta native mesmerizes audiences with her riveting instrumental performances. Thumping basslines, intricate tunings, fluid melodies, and slapping percussion abound in her unique compositions that walk an edgy line between funk, flamenco, and jazz.
Kaki's natural gift for creating striking tones and her pintensely physical style of playing led Michael Simmons of the L.A. Weekly to proclaim "she is to the acoustic what Hendrix was to the electric."
Over the past couple years, Kaki has been touring with the acts as varied as Marianne Faithful, Keb Mo', and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, gracing the covers of magazines like Acoustic Guitar and Frets, and appearing on network television programs such as Late Night with Conan O'Brien. She recently release her second album, Legs To Make Us Longer (Epic).
