tango guitar & piano duo from Buenos Aires
w/ Bertram Levy bandoneon

Door 7:30pm, Music 8:00pm | Purchase advance tickets: $15.50

Tango, the richly expressive, emotional music of the city of Bueno Aires, rose from the status of decadent, forbidden music in the late 1800s to become a deep symbol of Argentine culture, famed worldwide for its melodic and rhythmical richness, lyricism, and sensuality. Tonight, tango comes to the Freight stage in the hands of two virtuoso Argentinians, guitarist Daniel Gomez and pianist Claudio Mendez, accompanied by bandoneon (Argentinian concertina) ace, Bertram Levy. With repertoire and arrangements encompassing both traditional and "nuevo" tango, Daniel and Claudio's passionate performances reflect a modern esthetic as well as respect for the rich history of tango. Tangos, milongas, and waltzes from Buenos Aires will be heard, as well as pieces by innovative modern composers like Eladia Blasquez and Astor Piazzola and originals from the duo's recent album, Tangueros.

A student of classical guitar since the age of eight, Daniel Gomez has performed tango music with various ensembles, and has accompanied the tango singer, Isabel Mendoza, as well as Cacho Castana and Opus Cuatro. From early on, Claudio Mendez was blending popular music (tango, jazz, folk and rock) with his classical piano training. In the 1980s he founded the group Nuevos Aires, and has accompanied numerous popular and tango singers including Emilio del Guercio, Opus Cuatro, and Nilda Fernandez. Washington State multi-instrumentalist Bertram Levy met Astor Piazzolla in 1989 and immediately abandoned all other musical endeavors to study "nuevo" tango. He is the founder and director of the tango ensemble, Seattle City Sextet.
