Tonight, the Freight presents a spectacular evening of Central European folk, village, and Gypsy music, as interpreted by some of the region's best-known artists, includingng cimbalom (hammered dulcimer) virtuoso Sandor Kuti and mesmerizing Roma violinist Attila Jakab. One of Hungary's outstanding cimbalom artists, Sandor Kuti was born into a famous dynasty of Gypsy musicians and became a member of the renowned Rajko Orchestra at the age of 14. He has toured America several times with the Kalman Balogh Gypsy Cimbalom Band, as well as playing with the klezmer band Budowitz. A violinist with both superb technique and a winning stage presence, Attila Jakab grew up in Transylvania where he spent his youth playing at community events among the Hungarian, Romanian and Roma communities. He has toured throughout the world, most recently as part of the 2004 show Gypsy Spirit: Journey of the Roma. Joining them are former Okros Ensemble member Laszlo Mester, one of the most respected bracsa (chord viola) players in the Hungarian folk music scene, and bass player Robert Door, a member of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble.
