Winter blues will all drift away on a lush tropical breeze during this evening showcasing four masters of Hawai'ian ki ho'alu, or slack key guitar (a traditional fingerpicking style named for the alternate tuning, or "slacking" of the strings, which produces a beautiful, resonant tone). One of Hawaii's greatest 12-string guitar players, slack key artist and composer Mike Ka'awa has played with many well-known Hawaiian groups including the Cyril Pahinui Band and Hokule'a. Mike brings his contagious passion for kiho'alu and his signature tunes of the past and present to his audiences. Born and raised in Kaneohe, Oahu, Kawika Kahiapo carries on his family's musical tradition with his highly regarded ki ho'alu playing and composition. With his rich vocals and innovative slack key style, Kawika is always a treat to watch. Born and raised on Maui in a paniolo (cowboy) family, Jeff Peterson is a member of the younger generation of slack key players who are redefining the genre for the new millennium. He plays with a light, delicate touch, his innovative style blending a new age musical sensibility and traditional ki ho'alu elements. One of the best and most dedicated of the new generation of slack key players, Patick Landeza has honed his craft with the masters, who have left their mark on his traditional-style ki ho'alu. Patrick's lovely voice and moving original compositions exude aloha spirit and give audiences a glimpse of slack key's bright future. Milton Lau, who joins the group on bass, has been a leading light of Hawaiian music industry for more than 35 years, as a musician, band leader, producer, promoter, agent, teacher, recording company entrepeneur, and festival producer.
