Multi-instrumentalist and composer Dirk Powell possesses a vibrant creative energy that crosses boundaries freely, while remaining grounded in the rural traditions of his roots in the southern mountains. He is famed for his energetic performances, his ability to unite traditional forms with modern sensibilities, and his expertise on a wide variety of instruments (including fiddle, banjo and accordion). Considered a leading expert on traditional Appalachian fiddle and banjo styles, Dirk's playing has been featured in the film scores for Anthony Minghella's "Cold Mountain," Edward Burns' "The Brothers McMullen" and Spike Lee's "Bamboozled," and on the acclaimed recent albums of Tim O'Brien. Tonight Dirk and his new group showcase tunes from his recent album, Time Again (Rounder), a hard-driving, exciting testament to the power of the living old-time music tradition. He's joined by a longtime musical cohort, vocalist Jim Miller, and a powerhouse Portland, Oregon old-time quintet (locally known as the Foghorn String Band) featuring Stephen Lind on fiddle, Caleb Klauder on mandolin, The Reverend P.T. Grover on banjo, Kevin Sandri on guitar, and Brian Bagdonas on bass. Hang on to your hats!
