Back on the road with three band mates from his original '60s ensemble, Berkeley's renowned troubadour Country Joe McDonald offers up topical folk music on themes old, current, and perennial in an evening of enlightened entertainment (and entertaining enlightenment).
As a Vietnam-era sailor, folk singer, anti-war activist, and advocate for environmental and veterans' causes, Joe McDonald has been an impressive figure in American culture for four decades, beginning in the '60s when his band, Country Joe and the Fish, started appearing at demonstrations against the war in Vietnam. The ground-breaking group was soon introducing the "psychedelic" experience and the infamous "fish cheer" to audiences across the country, including Woodstock, and releasing albums that became staples of college, progressive, and underground radio stations. This evening's performance reunites all the original members of the band except Barry Melton, also known as the Fish.
Bassist Bruce Barthol (who's also the resident composer/lyricist and musician for the Tony Award-winning San Francisco Mime Troupe), New York-based guitarist/keyboardist David Cohen, and drummer Gary "Chicken" Hirsh will be on hand for an evening of music ranging from Joe's Vietnam-era anti-war anthem, "Fixin' To Die Rag" to Bruce's new "Cakewalk to Baghdad."
