The balmy sounds of aloha melt the winter chill when slack key guitarist Patrick Landeza and 'ukulele virtuoso, Herb Ohta, Jr., join forces to kick off the holiday season, Hawaiian-style. Patrick and Herb's Hawaiian Slack Key Christmas show blends heart-warming stories of aloha, hula dance, and traditional Hawaiian Christmas songs as well as Christmas standards.
Musician, songwriter, producer, educator, and creator of the Hawaiian Music Institute, Patrick Landeza carries on the unique, traditional Hawaiian fingerpicking style developed in the 19th century by Hawaiian cowboys who loosened their guitar strings (or "slacked" them) for a lower, more resonant sound. Born to Hawaiian parents on the island of Berkeley, California, Patrick cultivated his craft by studying slack key from masters like Raymond Kane and the late Sonny Chillingworth. Tonight, Patrick features songs from his second album, Christmas to Me, a journey ranging from the Hawaiian Christmas standard "Mele Kalikimaka" to the jazz classic "I'll Be Home for Christmas," with Patrick's love and respect for slack key tying everything together.
Two-time Hawai'i Music Award winner, Herb Ohta, Jr. has played the 'ukulele for almost 30 years from the tender age of three, first instructed by his father, the 'ukulele legend Ohta-san. Solidly established in the company of musicians who promote the 'ukulele, Honolulu native Herb has a career that spans more than 20 recordings and over two decades of teaching. While reminiscent of his father's style, Herb's playing also reflects the inspiration of 'ukulele virtuoso, Eddie Kamae and slack key guitar great, Ledward Kaapana.
