EEEHAW! Brace yourselves, folks: here comes another evening of wild instrumental pyrotechnics from this truly radical gathering of musical maniacs. As their name implies, Psychograss take bluegrass as their springboard, and then quickly proceed to leap straight off into outer space, improvising up a storm that sparks with brilliant interplay and plumbs surprising musical depths. The group's members -- Darol Anger, Mike Marshall, Todd Phillips, David Grier, and Tony Trischka -- are a group of virtuoso kindred spirits, each constantly working to redefine the boundaries of his chosen instrument. Darol, famous as an inventor of innovative string techniques, is also a founding member of five well-known groups including Montreaux and New Grange. Mike, one of the world's top mandolin players, has played with just about everyone, from the David Grisman Quintet to Bela Fleck, as well as working extensively with Darol. String bassist Todd participated in many of the key acoustic music projects of the past three decades, appearing in over 50 recordings ranging from bluegrass through new acoustic music to jazz (he also played in the David Grisman Quintet and Montreux with Darol and Mike). Considered by many bluegrass aficionados to be the greatest flatpicker alive, David has worked with nearly every major living bluegrass artist, and has truly redefined the art of flatpicked guitar. Tony is a pioneering 5-string banjo player; his fiery, questing, and reactive style has brought modern banjo to audiences all over the world. If you lined up every album on which these guys have ever performed, the discs would probably stretch around the equator. As Psychograss, the fabulous five can be heard on the 1996 Sugar Hill recording Like Minds. Still, as you can probably guess, seeing them live is the unforgettable experience of choice!
