Straight from Istanbul, the Erdemsel Brothers trio -- siblings Omer Faruk and Sinan, joined by gypsy fiddler Husnu Tuzsuz -- present a lively evening of Turkish folk and traditional music. Omer Faruk, a singer who learned his extensive repertoire of folk and Sufi music from his father and grandfather, has performed extensively with various traditional music groups in Istanbul, including the Turkish Ministry of Culture's official folk ensemble. Also a member of the Culture Ministry's group, Sinan taught himself to play the oud (short-necked lute) and baglama (long-necked lute) at the age of 10, then went on to study at the Turkish Music Conservatory. Husnu learned fiddling from members of his highly musical family, as well as studying with the famous gypsy violinist Ahirkapili Hasan. Husnu, whose passionate playing preserves the traditional Turkish gypsy fiddling style, is much in demand as an accompanist for Istanbul's singers, as well as playing in many Turkish classical music ensembles. |
