Not too far beneath the shiny Americanized veneer of modern-day Romania still survives the vibrant, almost medieval culture of old Transylvania: the band from Szászcsávás invites audiences through a magical musical window into some of the region's most joyfully compelling traditions. Hailing from a small village in the Kis-Kükállõ River valley of southwestern Transylvania, the Gypsy musicians from Szászcsávás have for many generations been in high demand at weddings and other celebrations throughout the region, where they are renowned for their dynamic, richly ornamented playing and for their enormous repertoire of Hungarian, Romanian, and Gypsy dance music. At the core of the band is a trio who have been playing together for over 30 years, prímás (lead fiddle) István Jámbor, his brother Mátyás Csányi on bass, and their brother-in-law Ferenc Mezei on kontra (Transylvanian viola). The band is filled out with younger relatives Ferenc Jámbor, Levente Mezei, and Sándor Csányi. Come be transported to a heel-kicking, leg-slapping Transylvanian village dance! |
