no-holds-barred a cappella

A five-man rock band without instruments, the House Jacks -- Bert Bacco, Deke Sharon, Garth Kravits, Wes Carroll, and Austin Willacy -- practice a "no-holds barred" style of a cappella singing that obliterates traditional preconceptions about the limits of the human voice as they run the gamut from tender love ballads to dazzling mile-a-minute funk -- complete with mind-blowing vocal percussion and riffs that you would swear tore straight out of a whammy-bar guitar. (The phrase "house jack" came from the Yellow Pages, under Heavy Equipment Rental: a "house jack" is what you use when you want to move a house. 'Nuff said.) The jax originally got to know each other on the collegiate a cappella circuit of the late-1980s. Their days of trying out new material at Freight open mics long past, the group has completed several successful world tours, gathered thousands of devoted fans, and released three albums, most recently this year's Drive, a collection of live performances including selections recorded at our Addison Street abode.
