They have only been around a few years, but Nederland, Colorado-based Yonder Mountain String Band have already made a name for themselves as one of the hottest, and most idiosyncratic, young buegrass acts around. Bluegrass moshers take note: incendiary mandolin player Jeff Austin, bass ace Ben Kaufmann, talented banjo picker Dave Johnston, and nimble guitarist Adam Aijala dish up some of the most infectuous, high-energy -- dare we say danceable? -- picking this side of the Rockies. Mixing up classic bluegrass instrumentation and four-part harmony vocals with fast-paced rock energy into a concoction they call jamgrass, the group freely intersperses traditional and original songs covering familiar bluegrass territory with wild jamming interplay that blows the roof off of the genre's conventional ideas (a YMSB set is just as likely to include material from the Grateful Dead or Peter Tosh as it is to hearken back to bluegrass forefathers like Bill Monroe). These folks truly must be seen to be believed! YMSB released two self-produced albums in 2001, the live album Mountain Tracks Vol. 2 and Town by Town. |
