Inspired, no doubt, by the wide-open spaces of their home in Bozeman, Montana, the five talented singer-songwriter-instrumentalists of Kane's River approach bluegrass with a penchant for musical trail-blazing and a true sense of adventure. Unfettered by the conventions that rule bluegrass bands from more traditional locales, their compelling style of big sky bluegrass thrives on innovative rhythms and instrumentation, and places the spotlight on original songs more often then on traditional material. Kane's River features the inventive flatpicking and soulful voice of John Lowell (formerly of Wheel Hoss), the tasteful upright bass of David Thompson, the driving banjo and crystal-clear vocals of Julie Elkins (formerly of New Vintage), the tasty mandolin of Ben Winship (formerly of Loose Ties), and the deft fiddling of Jason Thomas. Formed eight years ago, the band has become known at music festivals throughout the US and Canada for its killer harmonies and hard drive, and its self-titled album, released in 2000 by Doobie Shea Records, received critical acclaim for its solid musicianship and refeshing approach. Don't Look Back plays classic and contemporary bluegrass and folk characterized by strong, rich vocal harmonies and hot instrumental playing. The band includes Brian Bloom on guitar and mandolin, Willie Pettus on mandolin, guitar and fiddle, John Bidwell on dobro, Dan Kozarsky on bass, and John Croizat on fiddle and mandolin.
