Basque accordion maestro & his hot band

According to the Boston Globe, "One of the most impressive world music debuts in years comes from a Basque accordionist, Kepa Junkera, a dazzling master of the two-row diatonic button accordion." the Seattle Rocket seconded the motion, stateing the Kepa Junkera "is something of a revelation, a true master of many styles, a tour de force."

Innovator extraordinaire on the Basque trikitixa (two-row button diatonic accordion), Kepa Junkera weaves an extraordinarily lush and lovely tapestry of pan-global rhythms and melodies. He invites audiences to expect the unexpected, as tiptoeing accordion melodies suddenly roar off into polyrhythmic adventure and classic foot-stomping rhythms mutate into jazz tunes. With his amazingly nimble fingers and expansive musical vision, Kepa has grown over the past few years from a Basque folk music icon to gain international acclaim for albums like his most recent, last year's stunning Maren, on which he collaborates with musicians from Sweden to Bulgaria to Madagascar, yet never loses sight of his roots. Born in Bilbao in 1965, Kepa started playing trikitixa (literally, hell's bellows) at an early age, and earned his chops playing at local village dances and with the great Basque group Oskorri, where he developed his unique style: light, airy, and full of joy. Tonight he will be accompanied by his band, including mandolin, cuatro, double bass, drums, and txalaparta, a Basque percussion instrument where vertical wooden sticks are used to strike horizontal planks of wood. Don't miss this chance to see the future of Basque music!
