Hawaiian Christmas celebration

Berkeley-based guitar master Patrick Kahakauwila Kamaholelani Landeza showcases lilting songs as well as classics and originals in the slack key (ki ho'alu) style. One of the few mainlanders accepted in the close-knit circle of top Hawaiian guitarists, Patrick carries on the unique, traditional Hawaiian guitar fingerpicking style developed in the 19th century by Hawaiian cowboys who loosened their strings (or slacked them) for a lower, more resonant sound. Tonight, Patrick celebrates the release of his third album, Christmas to Me, mixing traditional holiday pieces with originals, all with his nahenahe (sweet sounding) vocals and distinctive guitar style. Performing solo as well as with his outstanding band, Patrick, whose playing is always infused with the aloha spirit, describes tonight's concert as a celebration of Christmas in true island fashion, "expressing love for the land, love for the culture and love for my family."
